Costumes are, of course, massively important to circuses. They are valuable assets that add to the atmosphere and mood of each performance. Every artist has a wardrobe of show costumes, many custom made and bought at various stages along their travels. The dancers have a colourful collection of stone and sequin-adorned costumes and headpieces, and have around four costume changes per show.

Ring mistress Carol Courtney has made many of the costumes you will see at the show. Self-taught, she sews absolutely everything by hand, often staying up into the wee hours attaching sequin after sequin to make sure the costume is ready for the artist to wear at the next performance. As inspired by the season’s trends as any designer, this year she really took to neon pink. The gorgeous pieces you see here were all new for the 2008 season.
